Month: April 2007

  • MACMH Conference....

Today was the first full day of the conference.  I had trouble sleeping last night, but was up in time to have breakfast with friends before walking to the Conference Center.   The weather was not too bad.  It is suppose to be 20 degree colder tomorrow.  YIKES!!

Last night I started reading the book Mistress of the Art of Death, but couldn't really get into it.  So I started our book got Book Club this month, which is The Year of Magical Thinking - Joan Didion.

Today at the conference I saw the keynote speaker, who was pretty good.  He talk about our need to politically involved to change the lives of children in our state.   I went to a workshop called, Potpourri of Strategies for Working with Children with Autism Spectrum.  It was given by two presenter I know and have hired for consulting.  They were really dragging and didn't cover all the material.  I guess I will just read the hand outs.

In the afternoon I went to a workshop called "An Unplanned Journey: Parenting a Medically Fragile Infant" presented by a woman from Tacoma Washington about a program they started in a hospital there for follow up.  The incidents of neglect and child abuse on fragile children is greater and this has really helped with the medical follow through.  This topic of course I deal in my work all the time, but my nephew just had his first child (Harley James) last week and he was born with a cleft lip and palate.   My nephew and his wife are pretty young and really have alot of hard work ahead of them in raising a child with these type of medical needs.

Then I went to a workshop on Fetal ALcohol: a Unique Challenge.   It was interesting, but I realized I had seen this speaker a few years ago.   FASD is the only preventable cause of developmental disabilities.  Many people think and even Drs say that social drinking doesn't cause FAS.  WRONG!!  This is the one thing I am really able to get on a soapbox about!   She told a story of a woman that only drank communion wine 5 days a week at communion and gave birth to a child with FAS.  The first three month of pregnancy, before many women even know they are pregnant is the most crucial in development.   It is an invisible disability a small percentage of the children actually have the facial characteristics.   The state of MN was 4th in the nation for the amount of women that drink during child bearing age, we have now dropped to number 7 this year.   Interesting Wisconsin is the #1 state in drinking...hmmmm.....

After the conference we went to Angie's Canteena for Supper and Happy Hour.   Now I am back in my room to hang out with another book for the evening.  My last night to read for such long stretches of time.  What a guilty pleasure!!  Tomorrow is suppose to be 20 degrees colder than today.  BRRRRRRR....tomorrow late afternoon, I will head home.  I am ready to go home to my family.

  • My friends/co-workers all made it up here.  We all met for supper and sat and chatted for a long time.  I headed back to my room while they all went to walk for a while.  I wanted to spend another night curled up with my book.  Yep, I jut finished my third book.   It was a short read really.   I guess it was a good thing I brought 6 books up here with me.  I wanted to give myself alot of variety in picking what I would read.

    JUST FINISHED

  • I have finished shopping...I have found all the shoes to replace the ones I threw out before I left and I even bought a couple of shirts.  It is enough to start out the summer for work anyways.  I just could not find any shirts that I liked.  I HATE shopping!!!

It is still really nice out though a bit windy.   I just came back from walking over to the convention center for early registration for the conference.   A couple of my co-workers went to a workshop this afternoon on Psychiatric Medicaitons.  I decided to pass.   I will start the conference tomorrow morning with the Keynote Speaker, Jonah Edelman, co-founder of Stand for Children a child advocay organization.

Now I am going to read and rest until about 5:30 when I need to go meet the rest of my friends for supper.   Later!!

  • GOOD MORNING....

I actually slept in today!  That was so nice.  I woke up early but went back to sleep and didn't wake until 9:00am.  Today is the last day of my free time.  This afternoon the conference I am here for, The Children's Mental Health Conference starts.  I am meeting the other social workers for supper at the Timber Lodge Steak House.

So I am off today to finish up my shopping.  I still need a few more shirts for work and a pair of shoes.   Then hopefully it is nice out again and I can sit my the water and read.  Today I will try and remember to take my camera with as well.  It looks like it is nice out again today!

I just googled the weather for here in Duluth.  Today it will be in the 70's.....very nice!!   But then tomorrow it will be down to 49 and raining for the conference.  Well at least I will go to workshops all day and not be tempted to go out to enjoy the weather.   I better get out there and enjoy it!   Later!!  Have a great day!!!!

  • Calling it a Night......

Well I think I will go to sleep.  I just finished another book.   I can't tell you how much I am enjoying losing myself in books this weekend.  What a guilty pleasure!!!!

  • Saturday in Duluth.......

Today was beautiful.  I have never been up here for this conference and had good weather.  I decided against working my room today and went out and enjoyed the day!   I did some shopping.  I bought some gifts for the boys and bought some things for myself.  BTW - I hate shopping, but it was nice out at least.  I need new shirts for work.  My capris from last year looked good enough to make it another year.   Some are a size too big, but I will wear a belt.   I had to buy some new sandals.  The puppy got a few of my pairs last year.   So I bought two casual and one for work.  I went to DSW shoe warehouse.  My fav!!  Now I do like to shop for shoes!!  I also bought a really cute Tommy Hillfiger purse.  (ooops that was a splurge!).

I shopped only for a few hours.  I was going to go look for my tops for work, but I couldn't pass up this beautiful day in the mall.  So I came back down to Canal Park and walked around a bit.  Then I took my book and sat on the boardwalk and read and watched the Seagulls.  It was so nice!!   I had to even come back to the hotel and get a short sleeve shirt.  I was hot!   Once big ship came in before it got too cold to sit by the water.  I was called the American Century it was from Wilimington Delaware.

That is one big Ship!!!  It was cool to see!

Then I went to eat at Red Lobster....YUMMMY!!!!   Now it is 7:00 and I in the room for the night and plan on finishing up my book this evening so I can start a third one!   YEAH!!   I haven't turned the TV on yet.  I should turn it on this evening to see what the weather will be like tomorrow.  Well I am off to read, have a great night!

I wish I would of took my camera with me to the boardwalk.....maybe tomorrow if it is nice again.   The view out my window isn't very great either....pictures tomorrow......

  • Relaxing weekend....

Hello everyone -   I think you might actually see some post from me during the next few days.  I am up in Duluth for a conference that starts on Sunday evening.   I came up today to shop and relax a bit over the weekend.  I got to the hotel at about 4:00 and got all checked in.   I went and had supper at Timber Lodge Steak House and read for a bit.  I have finished one book already and starting on the next.  I hope to get that one done as well.  You can tell what I have planned.   One of my friends is here already too.   I was up in her room for a while because she was trying to VPN into work and couldn't.  After over an hour we finally got it working.  ARGH!!   So she is busy working.  I plan on working some tomorrow to get caught up on some work, but tonight I am just reading and relaxing.

Hope you are all having a wonderful day!  Enjoy your weekend!!!

  • OUR WEEKEND

We had a very nice weekend.   I really just took it easy and enjoyed my hubby and Tommy.  I decided since I am home tomorrow I will do laundry and that stuff then instead.

Friday I was suppose to appear in a hearing, but a continuance was granted.  Since I had driven into work I decided to stay and get some paperwork done.  So I ended up working about 46 hours this week.   Before I went to work I had to stop by the clinic and have my blood work done for my physical.   I have to have a yearly diabetes test since I was diabetic when pregnant with Tommy.  Since I hve been keep my weight down I have been fine.   At my physical the Dr said I had lost 14 pounds since my pysical a year ago.

When I got home we decided to go to the Drive-In Movie!  That was alot of fun!   We put the seats down in the back of the van and wrapped up in blankets and snuggled in the back to watch the movie.   Tommy LOVED going to the movie.  It was a double feature.  We figured that Tommy would be asleep by the second movie, but hestayed up for both.  Josh, Amy, Hubby, tommy and I all played frisbee before the movie started.   It was a great memory for us all.

We didn't get home until after midnight!  Wow, we haven't been out that late in ages.  Tommy fell asleep as soon as we started driving.  Josh has a picture of Tommy and I in the back of the van that I will share later.

    SATURDAY

I took the dog to get grommed.  Then we were off to run errands.  we spent some time at the library and had a nice day out.  At the library I picked up the coolest thing for my book group.  They have book club bags which include 10 copies of the book and a binder with questions and interviews with the author etc.  I also picked up a number of great books I had reserved.  I will be busy when in Duluth.  I hope to get alot of reading done!

We came home and relaxed for the evening.  I read my book for book group.  I hope to have it done by Thursday.

    SUNDAY

We over slept and missed church.  We ended up watching on TV.   I finished reading my book for bookgroup and then I ran to Rainbow as I had a raincheck for Smart Ones Dinner for $1.00 each.  I have those most days for lunch at work.  We put away the groceries and made a picnic lunch and headed to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory for the day.   The library has free passses for many museums around the Twin Cities so we are going to try and check those out through the Museum Adventure Pass Program.   We hope to be able to check out the passes for the MN Zoo as they have their baby animals right now.  That is always fun for Tommy as he enjoys feeding the animals and petting them.   We also want to go to the Science Museum.

Our day today at the zoo was pretty rainy, but we made the best of it.  We did get out picnic in which was a plus.

Tommy fell asleep on the way home from the zoo, so hubby and I took advantag of that.  Hubby caught a nap on the couch and I read in the bedroom for a few hours.  I started a book I had picked up at the library.  I am not sure when I read the review of it.  I frequently read the magazine "Bookmarks" to find new authors and titles to read.  My "to Be Read" pile and list are way too ambitious!  I started a book called Heart Shaped Box, which is not a type of book I read much anymore.  It is more of a horror type book, but I thought I would give it a try.  I have read the first 100 pages and am interested so far.  I want to finish it before I go to Duluth.  I don't want to be reading a horror book when alone in the hotel room.

Other Books on My TBR Pile from the Library:

I am ready for an early bedtime tonight!!  I hope Tommy cooperates with that.  Tomorrow will be a busy day around the house for me.   I would like to get groceries tomorrow evening as well.
