  • The 1st Mural Has Started....

I got up early to paint for a few hours.  I have to do laundry and clean the rest of the day.   Hopefully I can paint for an hour or so this evening.  We will see.   I started the 1st Mural this morning....I am not even 1/2 done, but it feels good to have started!

This is right above Tommy's bed.  This is the wall adjacent to the wall which will have the treasure map on it.

    Yesterday

Erik's shopping day went very well.  First we went to Donald's in downtown St Paul to order Tommy's uniforms.   They measured him for pants and found a husky pair that fits him great.  We bought two of those as well as 5 long sleeve shirts.  Our second stop was at Kohl's.  We found a pair of shoes, pair of jeans and 3 t shitrs for Erik.  He picked out all his own clothes.  Then we went to have lunch at Erik's choice of Kentucky Fried Chicken.     I think hubby was hoping Erik would have picked Red Lobster.

Next stop was Joanne's Fabrics.  We bought some cheese clothe to cover our sunflowers so the birds don't take our seeds.  We also had Tommy pick out some fabric for his curtains in his VERY pirate room.  Erik found some fabric he liked as well and wants me to make him new curtains too.   After I am done with Tommy's room, I will do a few things for Erik.

Lastly we went to Walmart.   We bought under clothes and school supplies along with a few household things.  We shopped very economically so once we got home, I asked if anyone wants to go bowling??   We all went bowling and also had two neighbor boys join us.  We bowled two games, but should of stopped at one!!

Then we came home and the kids when to play before supper and I painted for a bit.

Today, I really have to focus on working on cleaning the house and doing laundry.   Josh wants to me to go to Ikea to buy a new bed for him to take when he moves to his new place on Friday.   I am glad we will be out of town when Josh moves out as I don't think I could watch it.  I try not to think about it and I cry at the thought of him not being with us everyday.    It is very hard on me to have him moving out.   I will miss him so much.   But he is 20 years old and such a good kid.

Well I better I get going here and clean up the house before hubby get s home.  He had to present at an IT conference this morning.

    Have a wonderful day!!!

  • That's Better......

Hey Everyone!   Since we are going to be out shopping most of the day for Erik.  I got up early and decided to paint a bit.   Remember how I didn't really like Tommy's name that I painted.

    100_1753

They just really didn't stand out from the wall color.   So I set out to fix that and here is what I came up with!!

    100_1755

I used a piece of poster board and made a scroll stencil.   I like this better as the letters stand out more.  I still haven't gotten to his 1st mural as this took me a while to figure out.

    Next Up.....

    100_1757

This cork board will be transformed into a very pirate themed bulletin board for above Tommy's desk.   Hubby had a great idea so now we just have to see if I can pull it off!!!

I am off to try and get a coat of paint on it before be head out shopping.  Have a great day!!!!

  • Back to School

    logo

Our efforts around our house are focusing on getting back into our school year routine.  Our children do go to school outside of our home, but the structure around our home must change.  August is my back to school challenge month.  Join me in the challenge???

There are five areas that I am planning on addressing this month in the life of our family.

    Ready for School Challenge

    1)     Command Central

    2)     Children’s Bedrooms

              3)     Shopping

    4)     Home Management

              5)     School Memories

I won't necessarily address each of these areas in order, but would like to share my ideas with you.  Hopefully you will also share your ideas as I would love to get things even more organized around here.

    SHOPPING

    ·         Clothes/shoes/haircuts

    ·         Supplies

    ·         Sell Items

    ·         End of Summer Outing

    ·         Shopping Day for Each Child

We are doing our shopping a bit different this year.  We want shopping to be fun for the boys.  This year each boy has a weekend that is their shopping weekend.   Last weekend we took Tommy shopping.  He goes to a private Christian school so he really doesn't need much for  school clothes.   The night before shopping I went through his uniforms and made a list of what he needed.

Tommy needed:  A keyboard for piano lessons,  5 pairs uniform pants, socks, two pairs of shoes for school and his school supplies.

Erik Needs:  Shoes, 3 pants, 3 school shirts, 1 sweatshirt, underwear, and shorts to sleep in.

I make sure ahead of time that I have ordered gift cards from Shop with Scrips for all my shopping.   I decided that between Walmart and Kohls we should get what we need.

First stop was the shoe store.   I want to talk a bit about shoes for your children.  With raising Tommy and Eirk I have learned one thing.  They both have flat feet and shoes are VERY important.   With Josh I could buy shoes from Target and not worry.  With the other boys, we have to search for good quality shoes with arches.  Erik's feet actually turn in where his knees are touching.   Since I saw that with Erik I am very careful with Tommy's feet.  We have found the best shoes for Tommy at Stride Rite.  We buy two pairs of shoes a year.  One for school and one for gym class.   We have been buying Merrill as they have a very good arch in them.   I hope we are being proactive with Tommy's feet and they won't be like Erik's when he is a teen.   If only I had know about this when Erik was little.

Once the shoes get a bit worn and the feet start to turn in again, we have to replace them.   For Erik this has been two to three times a year.  So my advice to you, if you have children with flat feet do not skimp on their shoes.  They will thank you when they are older.  Erik is starting to have some pain in his back at times and I have to wonder if it is related to his flat feet and how he walks.

SOCKS - now that I chatted about shoes, I have to weigh in on socks.  If you want your life to be easier, try this tip.  When buying socks buy the same kind of sock for your child each year.  Erik always gets socks from Sam's Club, Josh gets Addias Socks, Hubby the ones with the yellow toes and finally Tommy has the ones with the dark blue bottom.   This makes folding and sorting so easy!!   I try never to deviate from this.  As the boys are getting older their socks are the same size.

SUPPLIES - I just head to Walmart for supplies.  I tell Tommy what the list says and Tommy finds it.  He enjoys picking out his own items.  I do not buy a new backpack each year unless it is needed.  Both Tommy and Erik will be using their bags from last year again.  Follow the supply list.  I have invested in a brother's labeler so I quickly label supplies.  I even label each caryon!  I got a bit obsessive!  LOL!!!

SELL ITEMS:   I keep a bag of uniforms throughout the year and when the annual sale comes I sell Tommy's outgrown items.  This year I should make about 50.00 if I sell them all.   I will use that money towards his new shirts for this year.  His short sleeves fit him from last year so we only will by 5 long sleeve shirts.  I buy all his uniform pants on ebay and this year we found uniform pants at Walmart that we will try.

SHOPPING DAY -  Each child seems to enjoy having their own shopping day.  All the shopping is about them.   We also allow them to pick where to eat out after shopping.  Tommy picked Red Lobster, my little shrimp boy!   Erik wants to eat at Old Counry Buffet after his shopping day!   It keeps them on task and more cooperative to know they will get to pick a place to eat out.  We rarely eat out so we reserve it for special occassions such as this.

END OF SUMMER PARTY:  We try to have a celebration to mark the beginning of the school year.    This year is different as Erik is with his mom that weekend.  So we are taking Tommy to a surprise concert.  Erik will have earned an outing at the Park at the MOA.  His PCA does some tutoring with him each day for a bout 1 hour.  If he cooperates through August he will earn a day at the MOA.

In the past we have stayed at hotels with water parks, etc.   We play games and enjoy some time together.  The younger two boys love to swim.

So how do you make the end of summer and shopping special in your home???

  • Just My Luck.......

I am really tired and just wanted to clean up the kitchen and go to bed.  I had a ton of dishes to do so I begin geting ready to begin washing dishes.  I notice the rug in front of the sink is wet.  I think "Man, I sure do get water all over when I am doing a massive wash, blanch, freeze assembly line for my garden vegetables".   I open the cupboard below the sink and am greet with a steam of water!!  ARGH!!!!

The elbow joint has a huge hole in it.  There is water everywhere and it went through the floor and into the basement.   Of course the kitchen is above the computer room so hubby's computer and printer got a nice bath.  ARGH!!!

Hubby wanted me to leave the dishes, but I just couldn't.  We have staff in each day to work with Erik and I can't stand to have dirty dishes in the sink.  So I resorted to washing dishes in the bathroom.  That was an advneture to say the least!!   I am going to scrub up some water and head to bed.   I have been having some bad luck lately.  I didn't even tell you yet about the little fender bender I was in on Friday with my van.  ARGH!!!!

    CALGON, TAKE ME AWAY!!!!

  • Change of Plans....

I had planned on working on Tom's room most of today, but hubby had a different idea.   He spent the entire morning outside harvesting in the garden.  So my afternoon was spent freezing 2- 5 Gallon buckets of green beans, which are now safely in the freezer.   I froze a few heads of Brocolli.   I cut up and flash froze the 6 greeen peppers from our garden.  I then cut up our cucumbers and am making refrigerator pickles.

I tried this recipe...but had to triple the brine to actually have enough for ice cream bucket full.   I have never made these so I hope they turn out.  I didn't want to get out all my jars and things to make pickles today!!

    CRAZY DILL REFRIGERATOR PICKLES

    Cucumbers
    Onion
    Celery
    Green pepper
    Dill
    Garlic

    Boil:

    1 c. sugar
    1 1/4 c. vinegar
    1/4 c. salt, scant
    1 1/2 c. water

Slice thin, cucumbers, onion, celery, green pepper. Put in plastic container along with dill and garlic. Boil brine mixture and let cool. Pour over sliced pickles and refrigerate. Ready to eat in two to three days, keeps well.

Now I have to finish up the pickles and then I need to clean up the kitchen.  I also need to get a couple of loads of laundry done before heading to bed.   This was been an extremely busy weekend!!!

  • I Did It.........................

Hey Everyone!   I made  bit more progress on Tommy's room last night.  Remember the hand painted pirate letters I found on the Internet??   (See Below)

    logan-g

Well, last night I tried my hand at painting my own letters.  I bought wooden letters at Jo-Ann's and painted them to match the ones I liked online.   I am pretty happy with how they turned out.

    100_1746

I finished putting up the items I painted into the room and decroated the shelf we previously had in there.

    100_1751

I found these great painted cut - outs at Jo-Anns.   I glued them onto his shelf and painted the pegs red.  It doesn't look like a Winnie the Pooh Shelf any longer.

    100_1752

I also glued some cut outs onto his coat rack.

     100_1753

His painted letter to spell his name are attached above his door.  I sure hope they stay.  I just used hot glue to afix them to the wall.   *Update - I changed my mind on the name.  I just don't think it stands out enough against the blue wall so I took them down and I am working on something new.  I guess that is what I will be doing for the day.

I feel a bit more confident with my painting now so I will start on his first mural on the wall today.   Wish me Luck!!!!

Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!!!
