  • dbet The menu is planned so we went to purchase groceries for the next two weeks. With my shopping list in hand, we headed off to Aldi's for the first round of purchases.  My menu was made around the meat I had on hand.  I am working on cleaning out my freezer so I can defrost it!    

    Our weekly food budget is $100/week to feed 5 people each night.

    Grocery Shopping for 1/29/12
    Walmart $ 44.50   - our actual cost was 96.83, but there were many non-food items.
    Aldi $ 79.50 
    Cub $13.27

    Total Spent for 14 days - $137.27 = $9.81/Day or $68.64/ week

    Our total spent was less due to my really trying to use up what we had in our freezer.  We hope to buy a 1/4 cow in a few months so I am working hard to make room in our freezers.   I anticipate a another week of so of trying to empty our freezers.

  • Grocery Budget: January 16th

    dbet   The menu is planned so we went to purchase groceries for the next two weeks.   With my shopping list in hand, we headed off to Aldi's for the first round of purchases.  I will not go grocery shopping without my menu made and list in hand.  If I do it is disasterous.  This week we were a little tight on the budget so we tried to purchase only what we needed.  I am hoping to have a pantry week for the third week and use up alot in our freezer, etc.  So hopefully the groceries I bought today will last for three weeks  With maybe only minimal purchases to make meals the 3rd week. 

    If you do one thing this year to help with your monthly budget, menu planning is well worth the time.   We have decreased our food budget back down to $100/ week vs $120/week as two members of the family have moved into their own home.   Every night I feed 5 people (4 adults and 1 kid) and we eat a sit down meal each night.   It is a great time to connect as a family.

    Aldi                      $ 158.29  (minus 16.99 for Fan heater which was not food)

    Total Spent for 14 days - $207.34 - 16.99 (Groceries and Paper products Total 190.35)   = $13.59/Day or $95.18/ week

  • Week #3 - Living Room

     How did everyone do on their entry/foyer last week???   Luckily for me, I was working one week ahead of you so I would have time to post the blogs, because life happens and I didn't work on any of my cleaning plan last week.    That happens and you have to pick up and start where you are.  Don't give up thinking you are behind....just start where you are.  We had a death in our family so time was spent make arrangements and being with family.  Quite honestly being sad makes it hard to do anything. 

    So I am happy I have this blog series running as it makes me get things done so I can keep up with all of you, despite how I am feeling.   So this week, we will be working in our living room.   Our living room is one of the most used rooms in our house, second only to the kitchen.   It also is the first room you see when entering our home.  We hang out daily in the living room as a family watching TV.

    My first step in cleaning our living room was to take everything off the walls and clean the pictures.   I spent some time looking around my living room with new eyes.  What would I think if I just walked into this home?   I was not very happy about how the bookcase looked in the living room.   This is where we store our collection of family movies.   So that had to be organized.

    I had to search a bit to find a photo of our over crowded bookcase as I forgot to take a before picture.  As you can see we have movies and games stacked on the shelf.  I wanted to organize the movies and games!  

    I decided with my hubby's permission to remove all the movies and disks from their cases.  We threw out all the cases and put all our movies into DVD binders.  We did this for the video games as well.   I still want to organize these better and put the movies in alphabetical order, but there wasn't time.   That will be a future project.   I need to buy two more DVD cases, one for music CD's and one for computer games.

    Another cleaning task that makes a big difference in the living room is to treat the floors.   I will admit this task takes a while and is a pain to do, but the end result is very nice.   I use lemon oil to treat our hardwood floors.  As you can see from the picture it makes a big difference in the appearance of the floors.   We have floors that are nearly 50 years old so this helps to keep them looking a little better.

    As you can see from my checklist, I didn't get everything done.  That is ok, every little bit helps and I can always go back at a later time and finish up a I have time.  The whole point is you are improving each room a bit each week.  

    Lastly, while completing the items on your checklist, keep a running list of the items you would like to buy for or do in this area.   My list for the living room contains the following:   buy two more DVD cases.

    Remember, small bites is the secret to eating an elephant!

    Tasks this week:  Plan into your schedule time this week to work on spring cleaning your living room.

    Monday -  January 16th - Creamy Chicken Breasts, Rice, Spinach, Salad

    Tuesday - 17th -Italian-Dijon Tilapia/ Stuffing /Lemon Butter Broccoli (E-mealz Aldi 411)

    Wed - 18th - Chicken Sausage Soup/ Bread  (E-mealz Aldi 411)

    Thurs - 19th - Beef Stroganoff with Green Beans 

    Beef Stroganoff

    1 lb ground beef
    8 oz sour cream
    1 can cream of mushroom soup
    (1 t salt, 1 t onion powder)
    (¼ c water, 1 t beef bouillon cube)
    1 pkg egg noodles
    1 pkg frozen peas

    In large skillet, brown the ground beef; drain.  Add sour cream, soup, salt, onion powder and water to skillet. Heat to a low boil; add bouillon.  Stir to dissolve; reduce heat to simmer.

    Boil noodles while preparing meat mixture. Serve stroganoff over cooked noodles. Serve with steamed peas

  • Week #2 - Entry/Foyer

    What stands in your way of getting started on a project?  Are you waiting for when you have more time??  Are you waiting until you feel more motivated?  There will never be a perfect time, life will always be happening around you.   The key to success is to actually get started.

    Are you ready to get started???   I am so ready to start getting my house in order.   I think the Cleaning Grand Plan is wonderful, but each person and house is different so feel free to adapt the plan to meet your needs.   I have adapted the cleaning plan over the years, but it remains my guide. 

    Being a person who goes on frequent homevisits as part of their job, I can tell you the entry to your home gives your guest their first impression of your home.   Do your guests have to step over things to get in the door??  Are they hit with an odor as soon as they walk in the door?    Do you have clutter on your steps?  Those are not the impression I want to make when you come to my house.  

    We live in a split entry home, so our entryway is very small.   Any amount of clutter is too much!   Granted you will often find my children's shoes scattered around the entry, but I do try to have them put them away nightly.  Life happens...and there is alot of living going on in my home with 5.

    My first step when cleaning my entryway was to remove all items that don't belong in the area.  Clutter has a way of becoming invisible over time.   Look at the area with new eyes and if it doesn't belong in the entryway - remove it!

    Next, I removed all wall hangings and the panels of the chandelier in the entryway.   Man were those dusty and full of cobwebs.   Hubby helped to clean the window above our front door, as I was too short.   Enlist any help you can as the faster you get this area done, the faster you can relax!

    One task I added to my checklist this year, by accident, was to remove the cold air return grate and vacuum out the duct.   The dust was visible through the grate so I thought I would give it a good cleaning!   Wow, was I surprised when I removed the grate.    I had no idea it was so full of dust.  My hubby frequently has sneezing episodes in the middle of the night and I think this might be part of the problem.   After seeing the amount of dust, my hubby removed all the grates on the main floor of the house and cleaned them out!   He removed 1/2 of a grocery bag full of dust and lint.   How gross is that???

    Our house is mostly hardwood floors so the dust bunnies are easily visible.   When scrubbing the floor in the entry I used a toothbrush to clean the crevice where the floor and baseboard meets.   Once a year this is cleaned, might as well do a good job.  I also took the time to scrub the floor the old fashioned way, on my hands and knees with a bucket and rag.   I find this produces a better clean, but is only done this way once or twice a year.   During the cleaning grand plan, I am allowed my obsessive cleaning behaviors, like using a toothbrush.  The rest of the year,  I don't have the time to clean that well and that is all right!   Outside of the Cleaning Grand Plan - good enough is good enough!

    Lastly, while completing the items on your checklist, keep a running list of the items you would like to buy for or do in this area.   My list for the entry contains the following:   buy new cold air grate, repaint the green portion of the wall. 

    Another suggestion I will offer that I find very helpful is to take pictures of the area you're working on before and after.   I find the pictures very helpful in spotting things I want to change or improve that I don't notice on a daily basis.  That is why you will see alot of pictures during my participation in the New Year's Cleaning Grand Plan.

    Menu - 1/2- 1/15/12

    We have eaten so much over the holidays, so it is time for a light menu.   I can't even think of making anything too filling.   Probably a very good thing for all of us.  I can't believe how difficult is to make a menu when you are not in the least bit interested in eating. 

    Holiday food this year was very good.  The Prime Rib was a big hit with everyone.   I will have to tweak the recipe a bit next time I make it.  I am so glad that we kept up with our meal planning over the holidays, it is one less thing to try to remember.   If you want to me more organized and save money in 2012, take a stab at meal planning.   You won't know how you ever managed without planning your meal.

  • Week 1: January 1 - Gather Your Tools!

    Happy New Year!!   This is the time of year we all turn to making resolutions.  Have you been conteplating some resolutions for the new year??   I don't make resolutions, per say, I make goals for my year.  Goals seem more purposeful to me and I need to come up with a plan to meet the goals.   It helps to get me into a different mindset. 

    Welcome to week one of The Fourteen Weeks of the New Year's Cleaning Grand Plan from Organizedhome.com.    Take a moment and read the history of this Cleaning Grand Plan.   

    Let's get started!

    Yes, I did mean for it to say Spring Cleaning!!   The title alone makes me think of all the time I will be saving once Spring is really here.  It also makes me think I am so far ahead, not behind.   So, Spring Cleaning it will be.

    This week we will be focusing on a couple of things to help you get ready to start the real work next week!  The first key to success is planning.  If you want to be successful with any project you need to make time in your schedule to complete the tasks.

    Your first task is to grab you calendar/planner and look at next week to find some time to work on your Foyer/Entry Way.   I am looking at my calendar and it is really booked in the evenings next week.  So I know I can't rely on having time to work on my cleaning plan in the evening.    I have Monday off, so I will carve out 2 hours to dedicate on January 2nd, after I get groceries.   I have something going on every evening this week except for Thursday and Friday, so I will dedicate some time on those evenings in my calendar as well.   My calendar is a very important tool that I could not get alone without.  I found a new one that I totally love.  I will need to write a whole blog post on my love of my new calendar/planner, but I digress.

    The next task is to make sure you have everything you need to get started next week.   It would be a shame to find out the last minute that you are missing your favorite cleaner.    Everyone has their favorite go to tools for cleaning, so gather your tools.   Some of my tools include - rags, tooth brush, cleaner and magic eraser.   Make sure you have extra vacuum bags and garbage bags.  You will feel so on top of everything with your supplies gathered and your plan in hand!  

    You are ready to conquer the world, well at least your foyer/entryway!  Good luck and let us know how you are doing!  Remember, small bites is the secret to eating an elephant!
